What is a breast lift?

Mastopexy, commonly known as a breast lift, is a surgical procedure that lifts and reshapes sagging breasts. The sagging can be a result of genetics, changes in weight, pregnancy, or simply age-related changes. During a breast lift, excess skin can be trimmed and tightened so the breasts sit higher and are firmer.

Additionally, the nipple and areola may be repositioned and resized. The end result? Firm, pert, youthful breasts – pure beauty. A breast lift does not change the breast size you may choose to have a breast lift in conjunction with breast augmentation or reduction.

Who is a candidate for a breast lift in Austin?

Candidates for a breast lift include women that are in good overall health, are maintaining a stable weight, and have realistic expectations about the results.

Additionally, candidates have one or more of the following:

  • Breasts that are flat or elongated
  • Breasts that have lost shape or volume
  • Downward pointing nipples or areolas
  • Sagging breasts
  • Uneven or asymmetrical breasts
  • Breasts that appear deflated

Where are the incisions in a breast lift?

When patients decide to undergo a breast lift, their primary concern is the potential for undesirable scarring. At Austin Cosmetic Surgery, our goal is to provide patients with the best results while also concealing scars to be virtually unnoticeable. Our experienced breast surgeon, Dr. Michelle Cabret, will choose one of the following types of incisions for your breast lift surgery:

  • Two rings, varying in size, around the areola
  • A keyhole shape that runs around the areola and down to the breast crease
  • An anchor shape that begins in the breast crease and extends up and around the areola

The procedure: What to expect

Breast lift surgery is performed on an outpatient basis under general anesthesia, and typically takes one to three hours to complete. First, Dr. Cabret will place the appropriate incision. Then, excess skin is trimmed for a tighter and defined appearance. Additionally, the nipple and areola are moved in coordination with the new breast placement and resized, so they sit front and center on the newly reshaped breast mound. Finally, she will close incisions with stitches and wrap the breasts in bandages.

What is the recovery after a breast lift?

You can expect to experience some degree of bruising, swelling, and soreness for a few days following surgery. You will have prescription pain medication to keep you comfortable in the early phase of your recovery. The surgical bandages placed at the end of surgery, or a surgical bra, must be worn for a week. You can then switch to a support bra, which you must wear for a month.

The stitches placed can be removed about one to two weeks after surgery at which time, most people feel well enough to return to work or other activities. Exercise and other strenuous activity should be avoided for about a month or until Dr. Cabret gives you the go-ahead.

How soon after breast lift surgery will I see results?

The results of your breast lift will be immediately noticeable. The results will continue to improve as swelling subsides, and scars start to fade. Even with this treatment, you are still subject to the effects of aging, but a breast lift produces long-lasting results that you can enjoy for many years.

Risks of mastopexy

There are risks to a mastopexy, in addition to the usual risks associated with surgery, which include:

  • Asymmetry
  • Irregularities in breast contour or shape
  • Partial or total loss of nipple and areola
  • A temporary or permanent change in nipple and breast sensation
